| Chittorgarh which was the Capital of the former Rajput Mewar State is the epitome of Rajput pride, romance and spirit. The main attraction in visiting Chittorgarh is the massive hilltop fort which is still intact. It is regarded as the one of the outstanding forts of the country. The fort is perched atop a 180 metre high hillock and covers an area of over 700 acres. It is said that the fort was originally built in the 7th century by the Maurya rulers and additions were made by successive Mewar rulers. The fort was surrounded and overrun three times by marauders. The temples and other structures inside the fort speak volumes about the skilled craftsmen of the period. Extensive arrangements had been made to store rainwater by building reservoirs like ponds, wells and step-wells to meet the needs of the dry months. Among other impressive structures, the fort also contains the palace of Rani Padmini and Meera Mandir where the famous saint Meera worshipped her lord Krishna. |
