| Puppet show or String show is a popular form of entertainment in rural Rajasthan. Bhats from Nagaur in Marwar Region known as kathputliwalas are the traditional puppeteers. They are also agricultural labourers. In the village a make do stage is created with the help of a cot or two, which are made to stand on the longer side and a cloth draped over to hide the performer. The performer moves the jointed limbs of the puppets with the help of strings attached to each of them. the puppeteer loops the string on his fingers. He moves the fingers dexterously so that the that the dolls very effectively convey the broad sentiments of each character they represent. The show starts with a fanfare with loud beats on the dholak played by the female members of the team. The dialogues are in the form of songs to the accompaniment of dholak and cymbals. The movement of puppets are synchronised to the songs. The shows are based on folk stories. The video clip is part of a show we saw at the Rajasthan tourism theatre at Udaipur. The entry fee and the fees for video camera are nominal. |
